The Ngozi province is in the northern part of Burundi, close to the border of Rwanda. There are 5 washing stations in Ngozi that mostly produce high quality commercial coffee including the Rugori washing station. The coffee that is grown here has a high level of acidity that is mixed with a medium sweetness. It has good body together with a fruity aftertaste. Generally, this coffee has chocolate flavour characteristics.
Rugori was built in 1978 in the Busiga Commune in the Ngozi province. It lies at an altitude of 1,680m. The name 'Rugori' comes from the Kirundi word uru-gori which means 'crown'.
This washing station collects cherries from over 2,700 local coffee farmers spread over the 25 neighbouring collines. During the harvest season, Rugori processes more than 1,300 tons of coffee.
